Following an exciting Super Bowl 56 with the Los Angeles Rams win over the Cincinnati Bengals, fans should be excited about the 2023 Super Bowl 57.
If you are one who has bet on the Super Bowl or are new to betting and want to know more about the super bowl odds, you may want to know about previous winners and their preseason odds to win.
The Super Bowl winner is typically not the preseason favorite, as you will see below.
2021 Season Winner: Los Angeles Rams
Before the start of the 2022 season, the favorite to win the Super Bowl was the Kansas City Chiefs at +450, followed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at +650 and Buffalo Bills at +1000. The winner of the Super Bowl eventually became the Los Angeles Rams, whose super bowl lines were the seventh team on the preseason odds at +1200.
As the 2022 season went on, the Rams odds dropped from +1200 to +800 by Week 4 and, by mid-season, ended up at +650, which was the lowest they saw all season and the best rank at third they would see all season.
By the start of the 2022 playoffs, the Rams had Super Bowl odds of +900, which was still ranked fifth amongst other playoff-bound teams. A bettor who bet on the Rams preseason could’ve turned $100 into $1,200, while a pre-playoffs bet would be $100 into $900.
2020 Season Winner: Tampa Bay Buccaneers
At the start of the 2020 season, the Kansas City Chiefs were again the favorite to win the Super Bowl at +450. They were followed by the Baltimore Ravens at +500 along with the San Francisco 49ers, New Orleans Saints, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers at +1000. As we now know, the Buccaneers won the Super Bowl led by Tom Brady in his first season off the Patriots.
Tied as the third team in the preseason ranks, Tampa Bay saw their odds jump from +1000 to +1800 by Week 6. Eventually, they would see their season-best three weeks later in Week 9 at +650, ranking them tied for third-best odds to win.
By the start of the playoffs, the Buccaneers’ odds again fell, this time to +1200, which was the sixth-ranked team. Week 6 would’ve been the best time to bet the Buccaneers as a bettor could’ve turned $100 into $1,800, while the worst time to bet them during the season would’ve been Week 9, where a bettor would’ve turned $100 into just $650.
2019 Season Winner: Kansas City Chiefs
Heading into the 2019 season, the New England Patriots were the NFL’s favorite to win the Super Bowl with odds of +400, followed by the Kansas City Chiefs at +600. The remaining top 5 were New Orleans Saints at +1000 and both Chicago Bears and Philadelphia Eagles at +1200.
The eventual winner of the Super Bowl was the Kansas City Chiefs, led by Pat Mahomes in his second year as the starting QB.
By Week 5 of the 2019 regular season, the Chiefs saw their odds go from the preseason +600 to their season-best +350, which was still the second-best odds behind the New England Patriots.
By Week 9, that +350 odds to win the Super Bowl landed them at their season-worst odds of +1400, which caused their ranking to fall from second to fifth.
At the start of the playoffs, their odds of winning the Super Bowl was +800, which was tied for fourth. The best time to bet on the Chiefs was Week 9, where bettors could’ve turned $100 into $1,400, while the worst time to bet on the Chiefs was Week 5, when $100 would’ve turned into $350.
Conclusion
As we have seen over the past three seasons, the preseason favorite has not won the Super Bowl. In fact, the last time the preseason favorite won the Super Bowl was in 2016, when the New England Patriots won.
This is something to keep an eye on heading into any upcoming NFL season. The preseason favorite, at least in recent years, rarely goes on to win the Super Bowl.
